Shopify for pet supplies

Shopify for pet brands and pet supply stores

Pet owners reorder food on a schedule, worry about the right harness size and love anything with their pet's name on it. A good pet store plans for all three.

Short answerShopify suits pet brands well. The free Shopify Subscriptions app handles autoship for food and treats, line item properties collect names for engraved tags, Shopify Bundles builds starter kits, and shipping profiles price heavy bags separately. Pet food pages also carry labeling duties under FDA rules and EU Regulation 767/2009. The Silver Arc builds these stores.

Is Shopify a good platform for pet brands?

Yes. Most of what a pet store needs is native or covered by free first-party apps: subscriptions, bundles, variants, shipping rules and customer accounts.

The pet category has three patterns that shape the build. Consumables (food, treats, litter) are bought on repeat. Accessories (harnesses, beds, crates) depend on getting the size right. And owners treat pets like family, so personalization and gifting sell.

How do you set up autoship for pet food on Shopify?

With subscriptions. The free Shopify Subscriptions app adds weekly, monthly or yearly auto-billed plans with subscribe-and-save discounts.

Customers can skip, pause or cancel from their account and update payment and shipping details. For pet food we usually offer delivery every 2, 4, 6 or 8 weeks, since bag size and pet size vary so much, and add a simple "how long will this bag last?" helper on the product page. If you need prepaid plans, build-a-box flows or advanced swap rules, a third-party subscription app fills the gap.

What labeling rules apply to pet food sold online?

Pet food is regulated like animal feed, and the label information should be on the product page, not only on the bag. This is general guidance, not legal advice.

In the US, the FDA requires pet food labels to identify the product, state the net quantity, name the manufacturer or distributor and its place of business, and list ingredients from most to least by weight. Many states enforce their own labeling rules based on the AAFCO model, and specific claims such as urinary tract health are reviewed by the FDA.

In the EU, Regulation (EC) No 767/2009 says that when feed is sold by distance communication, the mandatory labeling particulars must appear on the sales material or be provided by other means before the contract is concluded, with a few items allowed at delivery (Article 11(3)). Article 13 bans claims that a feed will prevent, treat or cure a disease, apart from narrow exceptions. "Supports healthy joints" may be fine with evidence; "cures arthritis" is not.

We store composition, analytical constituents, feeding guidelines and claims as structured data so every food page shows them the same way.

How do you handle sizing and personalization?

Put the size guide where the decision happens and collect personalization on the product form.

  • Size by measurement, not breed. Show neck and chest measurements per size, with a short how-to-measure note. Breed suggestions help, but measurements reduce returns.
  • Personalization fields for tags and beds via line item properties, with character limits and a live preview where it matters.
  • Clear return rules for personalized items, which in the EU are generally exempt from the 14-day withdrawal right as goods made to the consumer's specifications.

How do you keep pet customers coming back?

Make reordering effortless and give owners a reason to return between bags of food.

Subscriptions do most of the work for consumables, but many owners prefer to reorder manually. A clear reorder button in the customer account, a reminder email timed to the bag size, and cross-sells that match the pet (a larger harness as a puppy grows, dental chews for the same dog) all lift repeat purchases without discounting. Loyalty programs and reviews apps are common additions; we choose them based on what your customers actually do, not on a feature list.

How should a pet store be designed?

  • Shop by pet first (dog, cat, small animals), then by need (food, walk, sleep, play).
  • Real pets in real homes. User photos and reviews matter more here than in most categories.
  • Free shipping threshold that fits your heaviest common basket, so a 12 kg bag does not destroy your margin.
  • Reorder in one tap from the account and order emails for customers who did not subscribe.
  • Fast mobile pages. Most pet shoppers browse on their phones; see our Shopify speed guide.

How we build pet supply stores

We start with your catalog structure: consumables for subscription, accessories with sizing, and personalized items. Then we design a store around pets and needs, set up subscriptions, bundles and shipping profiles, and structure food data for compliance. Frequently asked questions

Can I offer autoship on Shopify like the big pet retailers?

Yes. The free Shopify Subscriptions app supports recurring orders with subscribe-and-save discounts, and customers can skip, pause or cancel from their account. For prepaid plans or more complex swaps, a third-party subscription app is common.

What has to be on a pet food product page?

At minimum the information required on the label: product name, net quantity, ingredients in order of weight and the manufacturer or distributor. In the EU, mandatory labeling particulars must be available before the online sale is concluded, under Regulation (EC) No 767/2009.

Can I say my pet food helps with health problems?

Be careful. EU rules ban claims that feed prevents, treats or cures a disease, and in the US the FDA reviews specific health claims. Function claims backed by evidence are safer; check wording with a regulatory advisor.

How do I sell personalized pet tags on Shopify?

Add text fields for name and phone number to the product form using line item properties, which save the details with the order. We add character limits and a preview so the engraving matches what the customer expects.

How should I charge shipping for heavy pet food?

Use a separate shipping profile for heavy or bulky items with weight-based or carrier-calculated rates, and set a free shipping threshold that still works for your heaviest common orders. Subscriptions can include shipping to keep the offer simple.
