Shopify for jewelry

Shopify stores for jewelry brands

Jewelry is bought on detail and trust. We design and build Shopify stores that show every metal, stone and size clearly, handle made-to-order and engraving, and keep the legal disclosures in the right place.

Short answerYes, Shopify is a strong platform for jewelry brands. It supports up to 2,048 variants per product for metals, stones and sizes, 3D models and video, engraving fields and pre-orders through apps. The Silver Arc is a remote-first Shopify studio that designs and builds jewelry stores and has worked with jewelry houses since 2017.

What makes a jewelry Shopify store different?

Jewelry combines high prices, small products and a lot of options. A single ring can come in three metals, several stone choices and twenty sizes, and the customer has to trust the photos because they cannot hold the piece.

That changes the build. The product page does most of the selling, the variant structure has to be planned before anything is imported, and disclosures about metals and stones are a legal matter in several markets, not just copywriting. We have worked with jewelry houses among the 400+ companies we have served since 2017, and these are the problems that come up every time.

How do you handle metals, stones and ring sizes on Shopify?

Use variants for options that change price or stock, and line item properties for everything else. Shopify raised the limit to 2,048 variants per product in 2025, so most collections now fit in one product.

A ring with 3 metals and 20 sizes is 60 variants, which is fine. A piece with free engraving text does not need variants at all: Shopify themes can collect it as a line item property inside the product form, so it travels with the order. We usually map options like this:

Jewelry challengeShopify solution
Metal, stone and size optionsProduct variants (up to 2,048 per product), with variant images per metal

Carat, cut, certificate, materialsMetafields shown as a structured specs block and used in filters

Is product media more important for jewelry than for other stores?

Yes. Media is the closest thing to holding the piece. Shopify supports 3D models in GLB and USDZ up to 500 MB, video up to 10 minutes and images up to 5000 x 5000 px, and 3D models can be viewed in the customer's room through AR on supported devices.

Our take: one sharp on-model shot that shows scale sells more than ten white-background angles. We plan the photo list with the client before design starts, because a gallery layout built for square packshots breaks when the real content is portrait video.

It depends on the market, but three come up most. None of this is legal advice; check with a trading standards or legal advisor for your own products.

  • UK hallmarking. Under the Hallmarking Act 1973, items described as gold, silver, platinum or palladium must be hallmarked unless they are under the exemption weights (gold 1 g, silver 7.78 g, platinum 0.5 g, palladium 1 g). The British Hallmarking Council treats your website as your premises, so the Dealer's Notice should be displayed prominently on the site.
  • US FTC Jewelry Guides. Lab-grown diamonds must be clearly disclosed, using terms like "laboratory-grown" or "laboratory-created" directly before the word diamond. Metal quality marks and plating descriptions are also covered.
  • EU nickel limits. REACH Annex XVII limits nickel release to 0.5 µg/cm²/week for items in prolonged skin contact and 0.2 µg/cm²/week for piercing posts. Your supplier should be able to show EN 1811 test results.

On Shopify, we build these as reusable content: a hallmarking page linked from the footer and product pages, a metal and stone glossary, and metafield-driven specs so every product states material and origin the same way.

What should a jewelry store's design prioritize?

Trust and calm. Jewelry shoppers browse for a long time and come back several times before buying a high-ticket piece.

  1. Fast, large imagery that still loads quickly on mobile, where most browsing happens.
  2. Clear specs above the fold: metal, stone, dimensions, weight, certificate.
  3. Reassurance near the button: delivery time for made-to-order, resizing, returns, warranty, secure insured shipping.
  4. Gifting tools: gift wrapping, gift notes, and gift guides by price and recipient.
  5. Wishlist and back-in-stock for limited drops, through well-reviewed apps rather than custom code.

Should a jewelry brand use a theme or a custom design?

Most established jewelry brands benefit from a custom design on a solid theme foundation. The brand look is the product, and generic layouts make premium pieces feel cheaper.

A theme can work for a first collection. Once you have a recognizable aesthetic, a custom Figma design with custom sections for collections, lookbooks and product stories usually pays off. We compare both in Shopify theme vs custom design.

How we build jewelry stores

We start with a discovery call and a design questionnaire, then plan your variant structure, product data and media before a single screen is designed. Our designer delivers the first design in under a week, with up to three revision rounds, and we build it on Shopify under your own accounts.

Frequently asked questions

Is Shopify good for high-end jewelry brands?

Yes. Shopify handles large variant sets, 3D and video media, international pricing and secure checkout, and premium brands run on it at every size. The difference between a store that feels luxury and one that does not is usually design, photography and product data, not the platform.

How do I add ring sizes in Shopify without too many variants?

Shopify now allows up to 2,048 variants per product, so a full size range with several metals usually fits as variants. If size does not change price or stock, you can also collect it with a line item property, but variants are better when you track inventory per size.

Can I sell made-to-order or custom jewelry on Shopify?

Yes. Custom details like engraving text or stone choice can be captured with line item properties, and made-to-order pieces can be sold as pre-orders through apps that use Shopify's selling plans, including deposits or later payment. State the production time clearly on the product page and in confirmation emails.

Do I need hallmarks to sell jewelry online in the UK?

If you describe an item as gold, silver, platinum or palladium and it is above the exemption weight, it must be hallmarked under the Hallmarking Act 1973. Online sellers should also display the Dealer's Notice prominently on their website. Check the Assay Office guidance or your local trading standards for specifics.

How should I describe lab-grown diamonds on my product pages?

In the US, the FTC Jewelry Guides expect clear disclosure with terms such as laboratory-grown or laboratory-created placed immediately before the word diamond, including in ads and social posts. A hashtag or brand name alone is not enough. Use the same wording in titles, specs and filters so it is consistent.
