Shopify studio for Germany
Shopify design and development for brands in Germany
We design and build Shopify stores for German brands, working remotely, with the payment methods and legal details German shoppers expect.
What do German shoppers expect from an online store?
German shoppers expect to pay the way they already pay, to see every legal detail in the right place, and to return things easily. A store that looks great but hides the Impressum or only takes cards will feel foreign, and it can also draw a formal warning letter.
Germany is one of the most rules-heavy ecommerce markets in Europe. That is not a reason to avoid it. It is a reason to build the store properly once, in German, with the legal plumbing in place before launch rather than patched on after the first Abmahnung (cease-and-desist letter from a competitor or association).
Which payment methods do German customers use?
PayPal and buying on invoice together cover more than half of German online revenue, according to the EHI Online-Payment 2026 study. Cards are a minority, which surprises many US and UK brands.
| Payment method | Share of German online revenue (2025) | How to offer it on Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| PayPal | 28.7% | PayPal Express Checkout, alongside Shopify Payments |
| Invoice (Kauf auf Rechnung) | 26.1% | Klarna "Pay in 30 days" via Shopify Payments, or a dedicated invoice provider |
| Direct debit (Lastschrift) | 14.4% | Third-party provider or app |
| Credit and debit cards | 13.7% | Shopify Payments |
| Installments (Ratenkauf) | 4.7% | Klarna financing via Shopify Payments |
| Apple Pay | 1.3% | Shopify Payments accelerated checkout |
Shopify Payments is available for businesses based in Germany, and Klarna is built into it for German customers paying in euros, including pay in 30 days, pay in 3 and financing. Our take: for a German launch, PayPal plus Klarna is the minimum. Card-only checkouts leave money on the table.
What legal pages and wording does a German Shopify store need?
At minimum: an Impressum, a privacy policy, terms (AGB), withdrawal information, a correctly labeled order button and, since June 19, 2026, an online withdrawal button. Your lawyer or a legal-text service writes the texts. We make sure the store actually shows them in the right place.
- Impressum (§ 5 DDG). Since May 14, 2024 the Impressum duty sits in the Digitale-Dienste-Gesetz, which replaced the old Telemediengesetz. It lists your company name and legal form, representatives, full address, fast contact details, register entry and VAT ID. Shopify has a "Legal notice" policy slot; we link it from every page footer.
- Order button (§ 312j BGB). The final button must say "zahlungspflichtig bestellen" or something equally unambiguous, such as "kaufen". Labels like "Bestellung abschicken" are not compliant, and a wrong label means no valid contract.
- Widerrufsbutton (§ 356a BGB). From June 19, 2026, B2C shops must offer a "Vertrag widerrufen" function that is easy to find, works without forcing a login (unless the contract was made in an app) and sends a confirmation on a durable medium such as email.
- Unit prices. German price rules require a base price (per kg, per liter) for many goods. Shopify supports unit pricing natively in Online Store 2.0 themes.
- Packaging register (VerpackG). Anyone placing packaged goods on the German market, including foreign online sellers, generally has to register in the LUCID register and join a recycling system before the first shipment.
One practical detail: Shopify now offers self-serve return and cancellation requests inside customer accounts, with a documented EU right-of-withdrawal setup. That flow runs through the customer account, while the German rules say customers should not have to log in. Ask your legal advisor whether you need an additional guest withdrawal form; we can build either.
How do VAT and shipping work for Germany?
German VAT is 19% standard and 7% reduced. If you are an EU business selling into Germany from another member state, the €10,000 EU-wide threshold and the One-Stop Shop (OSS) decide whether you charge German VAT; Shopify's EU tax settings support OSS registration.
For delivery, DHL Paket dominates and is available through Shopify Shipping for German fulfillment locations, alongside DHL Express. Hermes, DPD and GLS are common alternatives, and Packstation lockers are popular, so your checkout should accept locker addresses. Germans return a lot, especially in fashion, so a clear 14-day withdrawal process and a prepaid or easy return label are worth designing in from day one.
How do we work with brands in Germany?
We're a remote studio, so there's no local office; we work with brands in Germany remotely. We work asynchronously by email and Basecamp and schedule calls within your working hours.
- Discovery call. Book a slot at silverarc.youcanbook.me. We look at your catalog, payment stack and legal setup.
- Written proposal with scope and timeline.
- Design questionnaire, then a first Figma design in under a week, with up to 3 revision rounds.
- Development in your own Shopify account: German as the primary language, legal pages, payment methods, shipping rules.
- Launch and handover. You own the store, theme, domain and data.
We work in English (plus Spanish, Catalan and Hebrew). For German storefront copy we work with your copywriter, translator or legal-text provider rather than pretending to be native speakers. Every string in the theme is translatable, so your German text slots in cleanly.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use Shopify Payments in Germany?
Yes. Shopify Payments is available to businesses based in Germany and supports cards, accelerated checkouts like Apple Pay and Google Pay, and Klarna for German customers. PayPal runs alongside it as a separate payment method. Your business has to pass Shopify's verification checks.
Does Shopify create an Impressum for German stores?
Shopify gives you a Legal notice policy page, but it doesn't write German Impressum content for you. The details required by § 5 DDG (company name, legal form, representatives, address, contact details, register entry, VAT ID) come from you or your legal-text provider. We make sure the page is linked from every page, typically in the footer.
What does the German order button need to say?
Under § 312j BGB the final order button must make clear that the order is binding and paid, for example "zahlungspflichtig bestellen" or "kaufen" for purchases. Generic labels such as "Bestellung abschicken" are considered non-compliant. We check the label in the German checkout translation before launch.
Do I need the new withdrawal button if I sell to Germany?
Yes, if you sell to consumers. Since June 19, 2026, § 356a BGB requires an easy-to-find "Vertrag widerrufen" function with a confirmation step and an email acknowledgement. Shopify has a self-serve cancellation and returns flow in customer accounts, and there are dedicated apps; ask your lawyer which setup fits your shop.
Do you work in German?
Our working languages are English, Spanish, Catalan and Hebrew, so projects run in English. We build the store with German as the storefront language and work with your copywriter, translator or legal-text provider for the German texts.
