Shopify for florists & flowers

Shopify for florists and flower delivery shops

Flower orders are about a date, an address and a message, not just a product. We build Shopify stores that get those three right on every order.

Short answerYes, Shopify works well for florists. Native local delivery handles zones by radius or postal code, minimum orders and fees, and pickup in store is built in. Shopify does not natively let customers pick a delivery date or time slot, so most florists add a delivery-date app. The Silver Arc designs and builds these stores end to end.

Is Shopify good for florists?

Yes, as long as you plan the delivery experience from the start. Shopify covers products, payments, local delivery zones, pickup and subscriptions well; delivery dates and same-day cutoffs come from an app.

A florist store is different from most ecommerce. The customer is usually not the recipient, the order is tied to a specific day (a birthday, a funeral, Valentine's Day), and the product is perishable and seasonal. Your arrangement on the 14th may use different stems than the photo. The store has to handle all of that without making checkout feel like paperwork.

What does Shopify do natively for flower delivery?

Shopify's built-in local delivery lets you deliver from each location to a radius (up to 100 miles or 160 km) or to a list of postal codes, with up to 10 zones per location.

Per zone you can set a minimum order price, a delivery price (or free delivery) and up to three conditional pricing rules based on order value, plus a delivery information message that appears in the confirmation email. Pickup in store is also native: you set a processing time per location, customers see it at checkout, and they get a "ready for pickup" email when you mark the order ready. The free Shopify Local Delivery app adds route planning for up to 100 stops and delivery status emails.

The gap: none of this lets the customer choose a delivery date or time window. The delivery information field is free text only.

How do you add delivery dates, time slots and same-day cutoffs?

With a delivery date and time slot app. These apps add a calendar to the cart or product page, block dates you are closed, limit orders per slot, and enforce cutoffs such as "order by 1 pm for same-day delivery".

When we pick one for a florist, we check four things:

  1. Cutoffs per zone and per product. Same-day for bouquets, two days' notice for large arrangements or event work.
  2. Slot capacity. Your van and your workroom have a daily limit; the calendar should know it.
  3. Blackout and peak dates. Closing days, plus surcharges or limited menus around Valentine's Day and Mother's Day.
  4. Where the date lives on the order. It must show in the admin, on packing slips, in the route planner and in notifications, not only in a note field nobody reads.

What should a florist website design prioritize?

Getting the customer from "I need flowers for Friday" to a paid order on their phone in a couple of minutes.

  • Shop by occasion and by price. Sympathy, birthday, new baby, "under 50". Most buyers start from the occasion, not the flower.
  • Delivery check early. Let customers check their postal code and the next available date before they fall in love with a bouquet you cannot deliver.
  • Card message on the product page, with a character limit that matches your printed card. We collect it with line item properties so it travels with the item.
  • Honest photography and a substitution policy. Show the size (small, medium, large) with a real reference and explain that seasonal stems may be swapped for equal or higher value.
  • Funeral and sympathy flows that collect the venue name and service time, and a calm, respectful design for those pages.

Mainly returns, plant health and gift card rules. This is general guidance, not legal advice.

In the EU, the 14-day right of withdrawal does not apply to goods that are liable to deteriorate or expire rapidly (Article 16 of the Consumer Rights Directive), which covers fresh flowers, but you still need a clear policy for damaged or late deliveries. If you sell live potted plants online in the EU, the plant health regulation (EU) 2016/2031 generally requires a plant passport even for sales to consumers when the sale is a distance contract, so check with your national plant health authority. For subscriptions, make cancellation as easy as sign-up and state renewal terms clearly.

How we build florist stores

We start with your delivery rules: zones, cutoffs, daily capacity and peak days. Then we design the store in Figma around occasions and the delivery check, choose and configure the delivery date app, and build the theme so the date and card message flow cleanly into your workroom and driver routes. Frequently asked questions

Can Shopify do same-day flower delivery?

Yes. Native local delivery handles the zones and fees, and a delivery date app adds the same-day option with an order cutoff time. You set which products and zones qualify, and the calendar stops offering today once the cutoff passes.

Can customers choose a delivery date on Shopify without an app?

Not in a structured way. Shopify's local delivery settings have no date or time slot picker, only a free-text delivery information message. A theme can collect a date as a cart attribute, but a dedicated app adds cutoffs, blackout dates and slot limits that florists need.

How do I add a gift message to flower orders on Shopify?

Use line item properties, which are text fields on the product form saved with the item in the order. We add a character limit that matches your printed card and make the message visible on packing slips.

Can I sell flower subscriptions on Shopify?

Yes. Shopify's free first-party Shopify Subscriptions app supports weekly, monthly or yearly auto-billed plans, and customers can skip, pause or cancel from their account. Prepaid gift subscriptions usually need a third-party subscription app.

Do I need a plant passport to sell plants online?

In the EU, generally yes for live plants for planting sold through distance contracts, even to consumers, under Regulation (EU) 2016/2031. Rules for cut flowers and live plants can differ, so check with your national plant health authority before you start shipping.
