Shopify for event plant rental

Shopify for event plant rental and plant sales

Renting plants for weddings, offices and trade shows means dates, availability, deposits and a van that has to come back. Shopify can run it, with the right apps.

Short answerShopify can run an event plant rental business, but rentals are not native. Shopify sells products; date ranges, availability calendars, buffer days and security deposits come from a rental or booking app. Native local delivery, draft orders and invoices cover the rest. The Silver Arc builds hybrid stores that rent and sell plants in one place.

Can Shopify handle plant rentals?

Yes, with a rental app. Shopify has no native concept of renting an item from one date to another and getting it back, so availability by date, rental pricing and returns come from an app.

Plant rental is also a mix of models: one customer rents 40 olive trees for a weekend wedding, another buys three monsteras outright, a corporate client wants a quote for a six-month office install. Your store has to support all three without confusing anyone.

What is native in Shopify and what needs an app?

Selling, payments, delivery zones, quotes and invoices are native. Rental dates, stock by date and refundable security deposits are not.

Which rental apps work with Shopify?

There are two common approaches: an app that adds rentals inside Shopify, or a dedicated rental system connected to your Shopify store.

  • Booking apps inside Shopify, such as BookThatApp, which lists rentals as an event type, with blocked dates, capacity limits and a calendar widget, and deposits or bonds on its Premium plan.
  • Dedicated rental software, such as Booqable, whose Shopify integration syncs availability and pricing and adds booking calendars, a rental checkout and delivery or pickup options to your Shopify site.

Our take: if most revenue is sales and rentals are a side line, an in-Shopify booking app keeps things simple. If rentals are the business, with hundreds of items going out and coming back each week, a dedicated rental system is usually worth it, even though part of the checkout then lives outside Shopify. Test the full cycle (book, deliver, collect, damage, refund) on the app's trial before committing.

How do deposits work for rentals on Shopify?

Separate the two kinds. A booking deposit (pay 30% now, the rest before the event) is well supported; a refundable security deposit held for weeks is harder.

Shopify's platform supports deferred billing through selling plans: a partial charge at checkout with the remaining balance charged on a set date or a number of days later. Deposit and rental apps use this. For security deposits, do not rely on holding a card authorization: Shopify Payments authorizations last 7 days, which is shorter than most rental periods. The workable options are charging the deposit and refunding it after inspection, or using a rental app that manages deposits for you. Write the damage and loss terms clearly and make customers accept them at booking.

How should delivery and collection be set up?

Use native local delivery for the area and fees, and an app for the actual slots.

Native zones cover a radius up to 100 miles or 160 km or a list of postal codes, with a minimum order and conditional pricing per zone. Event work needs more: a delivery slot before the event, a collection slot after it, access notes (loading dock, stairs, venue contact) and sometimes on-site styling. We capture those details on the booking and make sure they reach your crew sheet, not only the order notes.

What else is specific to plant rental?

  • Condition and recovery. Plants come back stressed. Buffer days between bookings protect your stock and your reputation.
  • Bundles by look, not by SKU. Customers book "Mediterranean terrace" or "Boardroom green" packages; behind them sit individual plants and pots.
  • Quote flow for big jobs. We use Shopify draft orders to send a custom-priced invoice with a secure checkout link.
  • Plant passports. If you sell live plants to consumers by distance contract in the EU, Regulation (EU) 2016/2031 generally requires a plant passport. Check with your national authority.
  • B2B clients. Event agencies and offices can get their own pricing and payment terms through Shopify's native B2B, now on Basic, Grow and Advanced plans. See Shopify B2B without Plus.

How we build event plant rental stores

We map your rental cycle first: lead times, buffer days, deposit rules, delivery and collection windows. Then we pick the rental approach, design the store around looks and occasions, and build it so rentals, sales and quotes sit side by side. Frequently asked questions

Does Shopify have a built-in rental feature?

No. Shopify inventory is a single quantity, not availability by date, and there is no native rental period or return flow. Rental and booking apps add date ranges, availability calendars and buffers on top of Shopify.

Can I take a security deposit on Shopify?

Yes, but plan how. Shopify Payments card authorizations last 7 days, so a long hold is not reliable. Most rental businesses charge the deposit and refund it after inspection, or use a rental app that manages deposits or bonds.

Can I rent and sell plants in the same Shopify store?

Yes. Sale items are normal products, and rental items are handled by the rental app, often as separate products or a separate purchase option. Clear labeling (Rent or Buy) on collection and product pages avoids confusion.

How do customers pick delivery and collection times?

Shopify's native local delivery sets the area and fees but has no time slot picker. A delivery scheduler app or the rental app itself adds delivery and collection slots, with limits on how many jobs you take per slot.

Should I use Booqable or a Shopify booking app?

It depends on how central rentals are. A booking app inside Shopify keeps one checkout and suits a smaller rental range; dedicated rental software suits high-volume rentals with complex returns and maintenance. Trial both with a real booking cycle before deciding.
