Shopify for furniture

Shopify stores for furniture brands

We design and build Shopify stores for furniture brands, where the work is helping people commit to a big, considered purchase they can't touch first.

Short answerYes, Shopify is a good fit for furniture brands. It handles configurable products with up to 2,048 variants, 3D models shoppers can view in their room, separate shipping rates for bulky items and native B2B trade pricing. Made-to-order pre-orders and advanced configurators need apps. The Silver Arc designs and builds furniture stores on Shopify.

What makes selling furniture online hard?

Price, size and uncertainty. A sofa is an expensive, slow decision, and shoppers worry about color, comfort, scale in their room and how it will arrive.

Furniture stores also deal with operational problems most stores don't: products configured from fabrics, finishes and dimensions; made-to-order lead times of several weeks; freight or two-person delivery; and trade buyers such as interior designers who expect their own pricing. The store has to answer all of that before someone spends four figures.

How do you sell configurable furniture on Shopify?

For most collections, native variants are enough: Shopify allows up to 3 options and 2,048 variants per product, which covers size, fabric and leg finish for a typical sofa range.

When a product needs more than 3 options, or prices that change with custom dimensions, you need a product options app or custom theme code using line item properties. Before choosing that route, check that your theme and apps handle high variant counts; Shopify notes that some third-party themes, apps and sales channels still support only 100 variants. On Plus, combined listings can group separate products, such as each fabric color, into one product page while keeping them separate in your catalog.

Our take: show the configured result. A configurator that updates the main image, price and lead time as options change does more for conversion than any lifestyle shot.

Can shoppers see furniture in their room?

Yes. Shopify supports 3D models in GLB or USDZ format up to 500 MB per file, and shoppers can view them in their own space through their phone's camera.

3D models only display on themes that support them, including Shopify's Online Store 2.0 themes and the Horizon family. The bigger cost is producing accurate models, so we usually start with best-sellers and hero pieces. Pair them with real dimensions, a dimension drawing and photos of the piece in a styled room for scale.

How do made-to-order and pre-orders work on Shopify?

Through a pre-order app. Shopify's pre-order system lets apps collect a deposit at checkout and the rest later, but it has limits worth knowing before you plan your checkout.

Pre-orders only work on the Online Store and custom storefronts, and Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay and local methods such as Klarna can't be used for pre-order purchases. Stores with customized checkouts aren't supported either. If buy-now-pay-later is important for your price point, we weigh that against pre-order deposits when we plan the build. Whatever you choose, show the expected delivery window on the product page, in the cart and in the order confirmation.

Can Shopify run a trade program for interior designers?

Yes. Since April 2, 2026, native B2B is included on Basic, Grow and Advanced, so trade programs no longer need Plus or a wholesale app.

Designers and retailers get company accounts with trade catalogs, quantity rules, price breaks and payment terms such as Net 30, alongside your retail store. Plus adds unlimited catalogs, catalogs for a single account and deposits on large orders. See our page for wholesale and manufacturers for more on B2B setup.

What compliance rules apply to furniture sold online?

It depends on where you sell and what the piece is made of. This is a starting checklist, not legal advice.

  • US tip-over rule: under the STURDY Act, clothing storage units such as dressers that are at least 27 inches tall, weigh at least 30 lbs and have at least 3.2 cubic feet of enclosed storage must meet stability requirements (16 CFR 1261, based on ASTM F2057-23) and carry permanent warning labels.
  • California Proposition 65: online sellers must show the warning on the product page, through a clearly marked warning link or before checkout is complete.
  • EU product safety: the GPSR requires online offers to show the manufacturer or EU responsible person, product identifiers and safety warnings.
  • EU deforestation rules (EUDR): wood products, including many wooden furniture codes, come into scope from December 30, 2026 for large and medium operators and June 30, 2027 for micro and small ones. Check your products' customs codes with your advisor.

How we build furniture stores

We map your range first: which products are configurable, what is in stock versus made to order, and how each item ships. Then we design product pages around confidence (swatches, dimensions, 3D where it pays off, clear lead times) and build the shipping and trade setup to match. Frequently asked questions

Can Shopify calculate freight shipping for large furniture?

Shopify can apply separate rates to bulky products through custom shipping profiles, with up to 99 profiles per store. For live freight or white-glove quotes, you add a shipping app or carrier integration that returns calculated rates at checkout.

How do I sell fabric swatches on Shopify?

Set swatches up as low-cost or free products, often limited per order, with their own shipping profile so they ship as a letter or small parcel. Linking each swatch to the matching variant on the product page makes it easy to order samples before committing.

Can customers pay a deposit on made-to-order furniture?

Yes, through a pre-order app that collects a partial deposit at checkout and the balance later. Note that Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Klarna can't be used on pre-orders. For trade accounts on Plus, native B2B deposits are another option.

Do I need Shopify Plus for a furniture store?

Usually not. Advanced and below cover variants, 3D media, shipping profiles and native B2B trade pricing. Plus becomes worth it for combined listings, unlimited or account-specific trade catalogs, deposits on B2B orders and full checkout customization.

How many variants can a sofa product have?

Up to 2,048 variants across 3 options, for example size, fabric and leg finish. If you need a fourth option or custom dimensions, use a product options app or custom theme code with line item properties.
