Shopify studio for the Netherlands
Shopify design and development for brands in the Netherlands
We design and build Shopify stores for Dutch brands, working remotely, with iDEAL | Wero, Dutch legal details and local delivery set up properly.
What do Dutch shoppers expect from an online store?
Dutch shoppers expect to pay with iDEAL, see a fast and honest delivery promise, and find your company details without hunting for them. If iDEAL is missing, many will simply leave.
The Netherlands is a compact, digitally mature market where people compare quickly and where bol.com and Amazon.nl set the bar for delivery speed and service. Your own Shopify store competes on brand and experience, but the basics (payment, delivery, returns) have to feel local.
iDEAL is becoming Wero: what does that mean for your checkout?
iDEAL is being folded into Wero, the European wallet. Checkouts show a combined "iDEAL | Wero" brand in 2026, Wero opens to Dutch buyers from Q4 2026, and iDEAL itself is expected to shut down around 2027 to 2028.
On Shopify, iDEAL | Wero is a local payment method inside Shopify Payments for customers in the Netherlands, so the co-branding is handled for you. If you use a third-party provider instead, check its migration plan. Here is how the Dutch payment mix looks on Shopify:
| Payment method | Role in the Dutch market | On Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| iDEAL | Wero | By far the most popular online payment method; moving to Wero from 2026 | Local payment method in Shopify Payments |
| Klarna (pay later) | Pay later ("achteraf betalen"), in 30 days or in installments | Built into Shopify Payments for Dutch customers paying in EUR |
| Cards and wallets | Cards plus Apple Pay and Google Pay, useful for mobile and international buyers | Shopify Payments accelerated checkout |
| PayPal | An extra option some shoppers prefer | PayPal Express Checkout alongside Shopify Payments |
There is a legal angle too. Under Dutch law (article 7:26 of the Civil Code), consumers generally cannot be forced to prepay more than half the price, and the government's guidance says that if you offer prepayment, you should also offer other options. Offering a pay-later method alongside iDEAL covers this in practice.
What legal details must a Dutch webshop show?
Your website must show your full registered and trade name, address, contact details, KVK (Chamber of Commerce) number and VAT ID (btw-id) if you sell online. On top of that come the EU consumer rules every Dutch webshop follows.
- Company details. Registered and trade name, physical address, email plus phone or chat, KVK number and btw-id. We put these in the footer and the contact policy page.
- 14-day cooling-off period with a model withdrawal form.
- Withdrawal button. Since June 19, 2026, Dutch webshops must also offer an online cancellation button within the 14-day period. It does not replace the model form, so you need both.
- Privacy statement explaining what you do with personal data.
- Accessibility. Under the European Accessibility Act, webshops with 10 or more employees or more than €2 million annual turnover must be accessible. See our guide to the European Accessibility Act for Shopify.
Shopify now supports self-serve cancellation and return requests in customer accounts with a documented EU right-of-withdrawal setup. We configure it, make it easy to find from every page, and set Dutch-language labels. Have your legal advisor confirm the final wording.
How do VAT and delivery work in the Netherlands?
Dutch VAT is 21% standard and 9% reduced. EU brands selling into the Netherlands from another member state follow the €10,000 EU-wide threshold and can report through the One-Stop Shop, which Shopify's EU tax settings support.
PostNL and DHL eCommerce are the two big names in Dutch parcel delivery. Shopify Shipping offers DHL eCommerce Netherlands for domestic shipments; PostNL usually connects through an app. Next-day delivery is widely offered by large Dutch retailers, so show realistic cut-off times and offer pickup points if your carrier supports them.
Many Dutch brands also sell into Belgium, especially Flanders, where the language is the same but the payment habit is not: Belgians use Bancontact, not iDEAL. Read our page on Shopify for Belgium before you treat the two as one market.
How do we work with Dutch brands?
We're a remote studio, so there's no local office; we work with brands in the Netherlands remotely. We work asynchronously by email and Basecamp and schedule calls within your working hours.
- Discovery call, booked at silverarc.youcanbook.me.
- Written proposal with scope and timeline.
- Design questionnaire, a first Figma design in under a week, up to 3 revision rounds.
- Development in your own Shopify account, with Dutch as the storefront language.
- Launch and handover: you own the store, theme, domain and data.
Projects run in English. We don't write Dutch copy ourselves; your team or translator provides it and we make sure every theme string is translatable.

Frequently asked questions
Does Shopify support iDEAL?
Yes. iDEAL | Wero is a local payment method in Shopify Payments for customers in the Netherlands. You need Shopify Payments active and the Netherlands set up as a market if your business is based elsewhere.
What happens to iDEAL when it becomes Wero?
Checkouts have shown a combined iDEAL | Wero brand since early 2026. According to Stripe's migration guidance, Wero opens to Dutch buyers from Q4 2026 and iDEAL is expected to shut down around 2027 to 2028. On Shopify Payments the change is handled at platform level; with other providers, follow their migration plan.
Do I need to show my KVK number on my webshop?
Yes. If you sell products or services online, Dutch rules require your KVK number and VAT identification number on your website, along with your name, address and contact details. Most stores put these in the footer.
Is the withdrawal button mandatory in the Netherlands?
Yes, since June 19, 2026 for webshops selling to consumers. Customers must be able to cancel online within the 14-day cooling-off period, and the button doesn't replace the model withdrawal form, so you need both.
Can I run one Shopify store for the Netherlands and Belgium?
Yes, with Shopify Markets you can serve both from one store with separate languages, prices and payment methods. The key difference is payment: Dutch customers expect iDEAL | Wero and Belgian customers expect Bancontact, so configure each market separately.
