Amazon to Shopify: How to Build Your Own DTC Brand (and Keep Amazon)

Short answerAmazon sellers build a Shopify store to own customer data, brand experience and margins without leaving Amazon. Run both: connect Amazon with Shopify Marketplace Connect, fulfill Shopify orders from FBA inventory with Amazon MCF, and add Buy with Prime in the US. Then invest in brand content, email and traffic, because a Shopify store doesn't come with Amazon's shoppers.

Key takeaways

  • Treat Shopify as a second channel you own, not a replacement for Amazon.
  • Amazon's free MCF and Buy with Prime app lets Shopify orders ship from your existing FBA inventory. Buy with Prime is US only.
  • Shopify Marketplace Connect syncs listings, orders and inventory with Amazon, Walmart, eBay and Target Plus.
  • Your DTC site needs brand storytelling, richer product pages and its own traffic plan to work.
  • Track contribution margin per channel, not just revenue, before shifting ad spend.

Why do Amazon sellers build their own Shopify store?

Mainly for control. On Amazon you rent the customer relationship: you can't build an email list from buyers, your brand page looks like everyone else's, and fees take a large share of each sale. A Shopify store gives you customer data, full design control and a channel no algorithm change can switch off.

The economics matter too. Amazon's own pricing page says referral fees for most categories are around 15% of the sale price, on top of the Professional plan at $39.99 a month and any FBA and advertising costs. On your own store you pay a Shopify plan and payment processing, but you also pay to bring every visitor in. That's the trade-off.

The most common reasons we hear from Amazon brands going direct:

  • Customer ownership: email and SMS lists, repeat purchase flows, loyalty programs.
  • Brand building: a site that tells your story, not a listing next to competitor ads.
  • Risk reduction: account suspensions, listing hijacks or policy changes don't take down your whole business.
  • Product freedom: bundles, subscriptions, pre-orders, wholesale and launches on your own terms.
  • Better data: you see full analytics on how people find and buy from you.

Should you leave Amazon when you launch on Shopify?

Usually no. For most brands, Amazon stays a major acquisition channel and Shopify becomes the place where you build loyalty, margin and brand. Running both is normal, and the tools to connect them are mature.

Our take: start by moving your best customers and your new launches to DTC, not your whole business. Let the Shopify store prove itself with email, social and paid traffic before you cut Amazon ad spend.

What is Buy with Prime on Shopify?

Buy with Prime lets US shoppers see Prime delivery promises on your Shopify store and check out with Prime benefits, while Amazon fulfills the order from your FBA inventory. It's part of Amazon's free "Amazon MCF and Buy with Prime" app in the Shopify App Store.

Key facts, from Amazon's app listing and integration page:

  • The app is built and supported by Amazon and free to install. Fulfillment fees are pay-as-you-go.
  • Buy with Prime and the Prime delivery promise are US only.
  • The app lists a checkout extension, so you keep Shopify checkout and your subscriptions.
  • You don't need to sell on Amazon to use MCF, but you do need inventory in Amazon's fulfillment network.

Read the reviews before you install. Some merchants report the app changing shipping profiles more broadly than expected and inventory counts drifting, so test on a duplicate setup and check your shipping settings after connecting.

How does Amazon Multi-Channel Fulfillment work with Shopify?

Amazon Multi-Channel Fulfillment (MCF) picks, packs and ships your Shopify orders from the same inventory you already hold in FBA. Tracking flows back into your Shopify admin, and orders ship in unbranded packaging at no extra cost.

According to Amazon, the Shopify integration supports the US, UK, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Japan and India, with expansion to all MCF countries planned. Setup looks like this:

  1. Install the Amazon MCF and Buy with Prime app from the Shopify App Store.
  2. Connect your Amazon seller account.
  3. Map Shopify SKUs to your FBA inventory (shared SKUs are matched automatically).
  4. Choose which ship speeds and rates customers see at checkout.
  5. Place test orders and confirm tracking and inventory updates in Shopify.

MCF is a good start because you don't need a second warehouse. As DTC grows, many brands add a 3PL for branded packaging, inserts and gift options, and keep FBA for Amazon.

How do you sync inventory between Amazon and Shopify?

Pick one system as the source of truth for stock, and connect everything to it. For most brands starting out, that's Shopify plus one integration app.

  • Shopify Marketplace Connect (Shopify's own app, formerly Codisto) syncs listings, orders and inventory with Amazon, Walmart (US), Target Plus (US) and eBay. Shopify lists the first 50 marketplace-synced orders a month as free, then 1% per synced order, capped at $99 a month.
  • Amazon MCF app pushes FBA inventory levels into Shopify so you don't oversell DTC orders from Amazon stock.
  • Inventory or ERP tools make sense once you have multiple warehouses, wholesale or a large catalog.

Keep SKUs identical across channels. Most sync problems we see trace back to mismatched SKUs, variants created differently on each platform, or two apps both trying to write inventory.

What brand content does an Amazon brand need for DTC?

More than your Amazon listing. Amazon shoppers already trust the platform. On your own site, the design and content have to earn that trust, and answer questions a listing never had to.

  • Brand story: an About page and homepage that explain who you are and why your product exists.
  • Product pages: lifestyle photography, video, comparison charts, ingredients or specs, size guides and FAQs. Reuse A+ content as a starting point, then go deeper.
  • Social proof: import or collect reviews on your own site. Check your review app's rules before importing Amazon reviews.
  • Offers Amazon can't do well: bundles, subscriptions, gift sets, samples, exclusive colors.
  • Trust signals: clear shipping and returns, real contact details, secure checkout with Shop Pay, Apple Pay and PayPal.

How do you get traffic to a new Shopify store?

Plan traffic before launch, because a new store has none. Use your Amazon success as leverage through branded search ads and social, and build email capture from day one. Don't use Amazon package inserts to send buyers to your site; Amazon's seller policies restrict diverting customers off Amazon, so check them before you print anything.

  1. Set up email and SMS capture with a clear first-order incentive.
  2. Run paid social to your best-selling product pages, not the homepage.
  3. Build organic search content around problems your product solves (see our Shopify SEO guide).
  4. Use creators and affiliates who can link to your own store.
  5. Measure blended results: some DTC ads will lift Amazon sales too.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my FBA inventory for Shopify orders?

Yes. Amazon's MCF and Buy with Prime app fulfills Shopify orders from your existing FBA inventory, ships in unbranded packaging and sends tracking back to Shopify. Fulfillment fees apply per order.

Is Buy with Prime available outside the US?

No. Amazon lists Buy with Prime as US only. Multi-Channel Fulfillment itself works in more countries, including the UK, Canada and several EU markets.

Can I import my Amazon reviews to Shopify?

Some review apps offer Amazon review imports, but check the app's terms and Amazon's policies first. Collecting fresh reviews from your own customers is the safer long-term approach.

Can I manage Amazon listings from Shopify?

Yes. Shopify Marketplace Connect lets you create and sync Amazon listings, orders and inventory from your Shopify admin. It also supports Walmart, eBay and Target Plus.

Which Shopify plan should an Amazon brand start on?

Most brands start on Basic or Grow and upgrade when they need more staff accounts, lower card rates or advanced reports. Plan choice rarely limits the Amazon integrations.
