Migration

How to Migrate from Squarespace to Shopify

Short answerTo migrate from Squarespace to Shopify, export products, customers and fulfilled orders as CSV files, reformat them to Shopify's templates, and import products first, then customers, then orders via an app. Rebuild your pages, blog and design in a Shopify theme, then 301-redirect Squarespace URLs such as /shop/p/ to /products/ before switching the domain.

Key takeaways

  • Squarespace exports products, contacts and fulfilled orders as CSV; all three need reformatting for Shopify.
  • Reviews can't be exported from Squarespace, and unfulfilled orders aren't included in the order export.
  • Squarespace's WordPress XML export covers pages and one blog, but not product pages; Shopify can't import it directly.
  • Default Squarespace product URLs (/shop/p/product-name) become /products/product-name on Shopify, so every one needs a 301 redirect.
  • Most of the effort is rebuilding design and content, not moving data.

Can you transfer a Squarespace store to Shopify?

Yes, but there's no one-click transfer. Shopify's Squarespace migration guide covers moving products, customers and historical orders through CSV files and apps. Your design, page layouts and reviews have to be rebuilt.

The good news: Squarespace stores tend to have smaller, cleaner catalogs than WooCommerce or Magento stores, so the data side is usually manageable.

Why move from Squarespace to Shopify?

Squarespace is a strong website builder; Shopify is a commerce platform first. Brands usually switch when they need more variant and inventory control, more payment and app options, international selling with Shopify Markets, wholesale features, or a theme they can extend with custom sections. Since April 2, 2026, native B2B tools such as company profiles, payment terms and up to three B2B catalogs are on every core Shopify plan, per Shopify.

What can you migrate from Squarespace to Shopify?

Products, customers and fulfilled orders migrate via CSV; reviews, design and product pages don't. Here's the breakdown.

The Squarespace content export

Squarespace's site export produces a WordPress XML file. According to WPBeginner's walkthrough, it includes basic pages and only one blog page, and excludes product pages, event pages, audio and video blocks, and custom CSS. Shopify doesn't import WordPress XML natively, so treat the file as a backup and source text, then move posts by hand or with a migration app such as LitExtension, which lists Squarespace as a supported source.

How do you migrate Squarespace to Shopify, step by step?

  1. Audit URLs and content. Export your indexed URLs from Google Search Console, note your top landing pages, and list every blog post worth keeping.
  2. Export products. In Squarespace, go to Products and Services, Products, and choose Export all.
  3. Reformat the product CSV. Map columns to Shopify's template. Shopify's guide calls out renaming Product URL to Handle and converting weight from pounds to grams. Products missing a variant option won't import, so fix those first.
  4. Import products into Shopify. Use Products, Import and deselect publishing to all sales channels until you've reviewed them.
  5. Export and import customers. Squarespace's contact export doesn't include shipping country, so add ISO country codes manually. Headings must match Shopify's customer template exactly.
  6. Export and import orders. Download fulfilled orders with All time selected, then import with a third-party app. Pause staff new-order notifications during import.
  7. Handle digital products. Turn off shipping on digital items and set up a digital downloads app.
  8. Rebuild the storefront. Theme, collections, navigation, pages, policies, blog and reviews.
  9. Configure operations and test. Shipping, taxes, payments, staff, and real test orders.
  10. Import redirects and connect the domain. Disconnect from Squarespace first, then point the domain at Shopify.

Our take: use the move to fix product data. Squarespace catalogs often have thin descriptions and inconsistent variants, and Shopify rewards structured data through filters, metafields and better product pages.

How do Squarespace URLs change on Shopify?

Squarespace product URLs follow /shop/p/product-name by default, according to this Squarespace SEO guide, while Shopify always uses /products/product-name. Since Shopify's prefixes are fixed, nearly every URL changes.

Page typeSquarespace (typical)Shopify
Product/shop/p/ceramic-mug/products/ceramic-mug
Shop category/shop?category=mugs or /shop/mugs/collections/mugs
Static page/about/pages/about
Blog post/blog/post-slug/blogs/news/post-slug

Your actual Squarespace paths depend on what you named your shop and blog pages, so build the map from your real URL list, not a template. Add redirects in Shopify under Content, Menus, View URL redirects, or upload them in bulk as a CSV. Shopify supports up to 100,000 redirects on standard plans, per its redirect documentation.

Redirect each old page to its closest match. Google advises against sending large numbers of old URLs to the homepage and recommends keeping redirects for at least a year, in its site move guide. The full process is in our Shopify migration SEO checklist.

How long does a Squarespace to Shopify migration take?

The data import usually takes a day or two; a complete migration with theme setup and testing typically takes two to six weeks. A custom design, a large blog or many product variants push it toward the longer end.

  • Under 100 products, theme-based: often two to three weeks.
  • Custom design: add design and revision time before development starts.
  • Large blog: budget for moving posts by hand and redirecting each one.

Common Squarespace migration mistakes

  • Assuming the XML export covers the shop. It doesn't include product pages, so products must come from the separate product CSV.
  • Forgetting gallery and image URLs. Squarespace image URLs won't survive the move. Re-upload images through the product CSV or Shopify Files and update links inside blog posts.
  • Skipping the customer CSV cleanup. Shopify has no column mapping for customer imports, so one wrong heading can break the whole file.
  • Leaving SEO fields behind. Copy page titles and descriptions from Squarespace's SEO settings into each Shopify product, collection and page.
  • Redirecting everything to the homepage. Map each URL to its closest equivalent instead.

What to check after launch

  • Spot-check your top 50 old URLs to confirm each redirect works.
  • Submit /sitemap.xml in Google Search Console and monitor the Pages report.
  • Compare product, customer and order counts with Squarespace.
  • Confirm order emails, tax and shipping on a real order.
  • Keep the Squarespace site available but unpublished until you're confident nothing is missing.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an app that moves Squarespace to Shopify automatically?

Third-party apps such as LitExtension list Squarespace as a supported source and can move products, customers and orders in one pass. Shopify's own free Store Migration app doesn't list Squarespace as a connected source, so the free route is CSV import. Design and page layouts always need rebuilding.

Can I export my Squarespace blog to Shopify?

Not directly. Squarespace exports pages and one blog as a WordPress XML file, which Shopify doesn't import. Copy the posts into Shopify's blog or use a migration app, then redirect each old post URL to its new /blogs/ URL.

Will I lose my Google rankings moving from Squarespace to Shopify?

You shouldn't lose them long term if every indexed URL has a matching 301 redirect and your titles and content carry over. Expect some fluctuation for a few weeks while Google recrawls. Missing redirects are the main cause of lasting traffic drops.

What happens to unfulfilled Squarespace orders during the move?

Shopify's guide notes the Squarespace order export only covers fulfilled orders. Fulfill open orders in Squarespace before cutover, or track them separately until they ship, so nothing falls between platforms.

Can I keep my Squarespace domain?

Yes. If you bought the domain through Squarespace, you can connect it to Shopify or transfer it. Disconnect it from the Squarespace site first to avoid SSL certificate errors, and set up redirects before you switch.
