Shopify Meta Description Length: Character Limit and How to Write Them

Short answerShopify accepts meta descriptions of up to 320 characters, but its help center recommends about 160. Google sets no fixed limit and truncates snippets to fit the device width, so aim for roughly 120 to 155 characters, with the key message in the first 120. Edit it in each page's Search engine listing section.

Key takeaways

  • Shopify's field takes up to 320 characters; Shopify recommends about 160.
  • Google has no character limit. It truncates to fit the screen and often writes its own snippet from page content.
  • Aim for 120 to 155 characters and put the main point first.
  • Edit it under Search engine listing on products, collections, pages and blog posts, and under Online Store > Preferences for the homepage.
  • Use the SEO Description column in a product CSV to edit many products at once.

What is the Shopify meta description character limit?

Shopify accepts up to 320 characters in the meta description field, and up to 70 characters in the page title. Shopify's product CSV documentation states both limits. Its SEO guide recommends about 160 characters for the description and suggests keeping titles to 60 so they aren't shortened in search results.

So the 320 figure is a ceiling, not a target. Filling it just means Google cuts your text off mid-sentence.

How long should a meta description be for Google?

Google doesn't set a character limit. Its Search Central documentation says there's no limit on how long a meta description can be, and that snippets are truncated as needed, typically to fit the device width.

Because truncation depends on the screen and the width of the letters, character counts are only a guide. Semrush, for example, recommends a maximum of 135 characters to be safe. Our take: write 120 to 155 characters and make sure the first 120 make sense on their own.

Does Google always use your meta description?

No. Google says snippets are primarily created from the page content itself, and it uses the meta description when that gives searchers a more accurate summary. Snippets can change from one query to another.

That's why a description that clearly matches the page beats one stuffed with keywords. Google specifically says long strings of keywords are less likely to be shown, and that identical descriptions across many pages aren't helpful.

How do you edit meta descriptions in Shopify?

Every main page type has a Search engine listing section in the Shopify admin. Click the pencil icon (or Edit website SEO), fill in the page title and meta description, and save.

  1. Products: open the product, go to Search engine listing, click the pencil icon, and edit the page title, meta description and URL handle.
  2. Collections: open the collection under Products and use the same Search engine listing section.
  3. Pages: go to Online Store > Pages, open the page, and click Edit website SEO.
  4. Blog posts: go to Content > Blog posts, open the post, and click the pencil icon in the search engine listing preview.
  5. Homepage: go to Online Store > Preferences and fill in the title and meta description.

If you leave a product's fields empty, Shopify falls back to the product title and description. That usually produces a snippet that starts with sizing or material details, so it's worth writing your own for top sellers.

For many products at once, export your products to CSV and fill the SEO Description column (up to 320 characters), then re-import. Developers can also set the global.description_tag metafield through the API.

Meta description templates for Shopify

Templates speed things up, but Google warns against identical descriptions, so always swap in specific details.

  • Product: [Product] in [material/key feature]. [Main benefit]. Free shipping over [amount] and [returns policy]. Shop at [Brand].
  • Collection: Shop [number]+ [product type] from [Brand]: [styles or use cases]. [Shipping or returns hook].
  • Page (About, FAQ): [What the page answers] from [Brand]: [two specific details people look for].
  • Blog post: [Answer to the question in one sentence]. Learn [what the reader gets].
  • Homepage: [Brand] makes [what] for [who]. [Proof point or differentiator]. [Shipping area or key offer].

Write for the top pages first: the homepage, best-selling products and main collections. Google's own advice is to prioritize those if you can't cover every page. Our Shopify SEO guide covers titles, structured data and the rest of the setup.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Shopify allow 320 characters if Google shows fewer?

The field limit and Google's display are separate things. Shopify accepts up to 320 characters, but Google truncates snippets to fit the device width, so most of a 320-character description won't be seen. Shopify itself recommends about 160.

Why is Google showing a different description than the one I wrote?

Google builds snippets primarily from page content and uses your meta description when it better matches the search. Make sure the description accurately summarizes the page and isn't a list of keywords.

Can I bulk edit meta descriptions in Shopify?

Yes, for products. Export to CSV, fill the SEO Description column (up to 320 characters) and re-import. For collections, pages and blog posts you edit each one in the admin, use the API, or use an SEO app.

What happens if I leave the meta description empty?

For products, Shopify uses the product description by default. Google may also write its own snippet from the page content. A custom description gives you more control over the message.

Do meta descriptions affect rankings?

Their main job is the snippet: what searchers see and whether they click. Treat them as short ad copy for the page rather than a place for keywords, which Google says makes them less likely to be shown.
