How to Build a Shopify Auto Parts Store (Fitment, Catalog, B2B) in 2026

Short answerShopify works well for auto parts stores, but it has no built-in vehicle fitment. You add year/make/model search with a fitment app or a custom build on metafields and metaobjects, import catalogs in batches, make SKUs searchable, and use native B2B for trade pricing. Choose an agency that has handled fitment data, not just themes.

Key takeaways

  • Shopify has no native year/make/model fitment; it comes from an app or custom metaobjects.
  • Products allow up to 2,048 variants and 3 options, but fitment should never be modeled as variants.
  • Native search already covers variant SKU and barcode, which matters for part-number lookups.
  • B2B with volume pricing and payment terms is on every plan; Plus adds unlimited catalogs and company-level pricing.
  • Pick an agency on its fitment-data process, not its portfolio of pretty themes.

Is Shopify good for an auto parts store?

Yes, for most aftermarket, accessories and performance parts brands. Shopify handles hosting, checkout, payments and B2B well, and the missing piece, vehicle fitment, is solved with an app or custom development.

The hard part of an auto parts store isn't the design. It's the data: thousands of SKUs, supplier spreadsheets, part numbers, cross-references and a fitment table that says which part fits which vehicle. Get the data pipeline right and the storefront is straightforward. For the industry-specific view, including compliance notes like CARB and Prop 65, see our Shopify for automotive page.

How do you add year/make/model fitment search to Shopify?

Shopify has no built-in vehicle database, so you have two routes: a fitment app from the Shopify App Store, or a custom build using metaobjects and metafields. Most stores should start with an app.

ApproachHow it worksBest forWatch out for
Fitment app (for example Year Make Model by EasySearch)Adds a YMM selector, a saved "garage" and fitment tables; data is imported from CSVMost stores, especially with standard vehicle coverageMonthly fees, how it handles very large fitment tables, compatibility with your theme and search app
Custom build on metaobjectsVehicles stored as metaobject entries, linked to products with list metafields; custom selector and filteringNiche coverage (one make, motorcycles, classics) or unusual logicDevelopment and maintenance cost; you own the data model and the edge cases
Native filters onlySearch & Discovery filters on tags or metafieldsVery small catalogs with a handful of vehiclesHard limits (below) make this break as you grow

Why native filters don't scale for fitment: the Search & Discovery app allows up to 25 filters per store, shows a maximum of 100 values per filter on the storefront, and doesn't display filters on collections with more than 5,000 products. A store covering two decades of vehicles hits those limits fast.

If you go custom, metaobjects have the room. Each metaobject definition can hold up to 1,000,000 entries with up to 40 fields, and a list metafield can reference up to 1,024 metaobjects. That last number matters: a universal part that fits thousands of vehicles needs a different model (fitment rules or ranges) rather than one reference per vehicle.

Our take: use an app unless you can name the reason it won't work. Custom fitment is a real software project, and you'll maintain it for as long as the store runs.

What are Shopify's product and variant limits for large catalogs?

A Shopify product can have up to 2,048 variants and 3 options. Shopify raised the variant limit from 100 in 2025.

That headroom helps with parts sold in many sizes, finishes or bolt patterns. But don't model fitment as variants. A "2019 F-150 XLT" variant creates duplicate inventory and makes reporting a mess. Variants are for what the customer receives (size, color, kit contents); fitment is data about where it goes.

A few limits to plan around:

  • Older themes and apps: some third-party themes, apps and sales channels still don't support more than 100 variants per product. Check before you rely on it.
  • Daily variant creation: stores with 500,000 or more variants can create 10,000 new variants per day via app or CSV import. Plus stores are exempt.
  • Media: up to 250 media items per product, and one image per variant.

How do you import a large auto parts catalog into Shopify?

In batches, with a tested data pipeline. Shopify's product CSV import is limited to 15 MB per file, so large catalogs are split into several files or loaded through an import app or the GraphQL Admin API.

  1. Collect supplier data in one master sheet or PIM. In North America that may mean ACES (fitment) and PIES (product data) files from the Auto Care Association standards.
  2. Define your data model first: which fields are product metafields (brand, OEM number, material), which are variants, and where fitment lives.
  3. Test a small subset on a development store, as Shopify recommends for partner-run imports. Imports can't be cancelled once they start.
  4. Back up before every update. Changing option values in a CSV deletes and recreates variant IDs, which can break ERP or marketplace integrations that depend on them.
  5. Automate recurring updates (prices, stock) through an import app or API sync rather than manual CSVs.

Can customers search by part number on Shopify?

Yes. Shopify's search covers variant SKU and variant barcode, as well as title, product type, tags and vendor. So a buyer who types an exact SKU will find it.

What native search doesn't do well is the messy reality of part numbers: OEM numbers, superseded numbers, competitor cross-references, and buyers typing "12-345" when you stored "12345". The usual fix is to store cross-references in a metafield and use a search app that can index metafields and handle typos and synonyms, or add those numbers as tags. Put a prominent search bar in the header and test it with the 50 part numbers your customers search most.

How do you set up trade pricing for garages and workshops?

Use Shopify's native B2B. Since April 2, 2026, Basic, Grow and Advanced include company profiles, up to 3 active B2B catalogs, volume pricing, quantity rules, payment terms and vaulted cards. Shopify Plus adds unlimited catalogs, catalogs assigned to individual companies, deposits and partial payments.

For a parts business, that usually maps to:

  • Tiered trade pricing: one catalog for independent garages, one for fleet customers, one for distributors.
  • Net terms for approved accounts, card payment for everyone else.
  • Quantity rules for items sold in boxes or minimum order quantities.
  • Quick order by part number, which is how workshops actually buy.

If every account has its own negotiated price list, you need Plus or a B2B app. Our Shopify B2B guide covers the setup in detail, and our Shopify B2B services page explains how we build it.

Is Shopify or WordPress better for an auto parts store?

For most auto parts businesses, Shopify. WooCommerce on WordPress is free to install and very flexible, but you run the hosting, updates and security yourself, and very large catalogs put real pressure on that hosting.

FactorShopifyWooCommerce (WordPress)
Software costMonthly plan, from $29/mo billed yearly (Basic)Free core plugin
HostingIncludedPaid separately; WooCommerce lists $25 to $350/mo for most stores

WooCommerce can make sense if you already run a WordPress operation with in-house developers, or need deep custom database logic. For a deeper comparison, read Shopify vs WooCommerce.

What should you look for in a Shopify agency for auto parts?

The best Shopify agency for auto parts is one that can explain how your fitment data will be structured, imported and kept accurate, not just one with nice-looking automotive themes. Ask to see that process before you sign.

  1. Fitment experience: have they set up a YMM app or a custom fitment model, and can they explain the trade-offs for your catalog size?
  2. Data handling: how will they import and update supplier data? Do they know ACES/PIES if your suppliers use them?
  3. Search: how will part numbers, cross-references and typos be handled?
  4. B2B: can they set up trade catalogs, net terms and quick order, and tell you whether you need Plus?
  5. Performance: fitment and search apps add scripts. Ask how they keep the store fast on mobile.
  6. Integrations: ERP, warehouse, marketplaces like eBay or Amazon.
  7. Ownership: the store, theme and data should be in your accounts from day one.
  8. Verified reviews: check the Shopify Partner Directory or vetted marketplaces, not just testimonials on their site.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Shopify agency for auto parts?

The best fit is an agency that has worked with fitment data and large catalogs, can explain how it will import and maintain your parts data, and sets everything up in your own accounts. Check verified reviews in the Shopify Partner Directory and ask for a walkthrough of their fitment approach before you compare prices.

Does Shopify have a built-in year/make/model search?

No. Shopify has no native vehicle database. You add YMM search with a fitment app from the Shopify App Store or a custom build using metaobjects and metafields.

How many products can a Shopify store have?

Shopify doesn't publish a cap on total products for normal stores. The limits that matter are per product (2,048 variants, 3 options, 250 media) and on imports, such as the 15 MB CSV file limit and a daily variant-creation limit for stores with 500,000 or more variants on non-Plus plans.

Do I need Shopify Plus for an auto parts store?

Usually not. Fitment apps and native B2B work on standard plans. Plus becomes relevant when you need more than 3 B2B catalogs, account-specific price lists, checkout customization or very high import volumes.

Can I sell auto parts on Shopify and Amazon or eBay at the same time?

Yes. Shopify connects to marketplaces through sales channel apps, so inventory and orders can sync. Check that your fitment data can be exported in the format each marketplace expects, because their fitment requirements differ.
