How Much Does Headless Shopify Cost? (Build + Running Costs)

Short answerHeadless Shopify itself is cheap to switch on: Hydrogen is free and Oxygen hosting is included at no extra charge on paid plans from Starter to Plus. The real cost is the custom frontend, which typically costs several times a theme build, plus a CMS, app integrations and a permanent developer budget to maintain it.

Key takeaways

  • You don't need Shopify Plus to go headless; Oxygen hosting is included on paid plans from Starter to Plus.
  • Hosting elsewhere is possible: Vercel Pro is $20 per developer seat a month plus usage, and its free Hobby plan isn't for commercial use.
  • The build is the biggest cost, because every page, search, filter, cart and account screen is custom.
  • Ongoing costs include a CMS, API version upgrades every quarter and a developer retainer.
  • If your goal is speed or a premium look, a custom Liquid theme usually gets you there for much less.

How much does headless Shopify cost?

As a typical market range, a headless Shopify build costs several times a comparable custom theme build, and ongoing development becomes a permanent budget line. The Shopify side is inexpensive: Hydrogen is free and Oxygen hosting is included on paid plans. The money goes into building and running the frontend.

Shopify says it plainly in its developer docs: a headless storefront costs more to build and run than a theme, and you need developers to maintain it after launch. If you're still deciding whether headless fits at all, start with our headless Shopify guide. This article focuses on the numbers.

What are the cost components of a headless Shopify store?

There are six cost lines: the Shopify plan, frontend hosting, a CMS, the build, app integrations and maintenance. Only the first is a fixed, published price.

Cost lineWhat it coversTypical cost
Shopify planProducts, checkout, payments, orders, APIsSame as any store: from $29/mo (Basic, billed yearly) to Plus from $2,300/mo
Frontend hostingWhere your storefront app runsOxygen: included on paid plans. Vercel Pro: $20 per developer seat/mo plus usage. Enterprise hosting: custom pricing
Headless CMS (optional)Editable pages and content for your marketing teamFree tiers to enterprise contracts, depending on vendor, seats and usage
Design and buildEvery page, component, search, filters, cart, account areaTypical market range: from mid five figures to several hundred thousand USD
App integrationsReviews, subscriptions, loyalty, search, analytics via APIs or SDKsApp fees plus development time for each integration
MaintenanceAPI version upgrades, framework updates, bug fixes, monitoring, new featuresOngoing developer retainer or in-house team

The build and maintenance figures are typical market ranges, not quotes, and depend heavily on scope and who builds it.

Is Hydrogen and Oxygen hosting free?

Yes, on paid plans. Hydrogen is Shopify's open-source framework, built on React Router, and Oxygen is Shopify's hosting for it. According to Shopify's developer docs, Oxygen is available at no extra charge on the Starter, Basic, Grow, Advanced, Plus and Pause and build plans. It isn't available on the Agentic plan.

Development stores, Plus Partner sandbox stores and trial plans can use Oxygen too, but without public environments, so you can build and test before you pay for a plan.

Oxygen has technical limits your developers need to design around, including a 10 MB maximum worker size, 30 seconds of CPU time per request, 128 MB of memory and outbound API requests that must finish within 2 minutes. It also doesn't support proxies in front of deployments. For most storefronts that's fine; for heavy server-side work, it shapes the architecture.

Do you need Shopify Plus to go headless?

No. Headless works on standard plans, and Oxygen is included from Starter upward. Many headless brands are on Plus anyway, because the kind of business that needs a custom frontend often also needs Plus checkout customization, advanced B2B or expansion stores.

So the plan cost of a headless store is usually the plan you'd need anyway. Check our Shopify Plus vs Advanced comparison if you're unsure which plan your features require.

What does it cost to run headless Shopify on Next.js and Vercel?

Using Next.js on Vercel instead of Hydrogen on Oxygen adds a hosting bill. Vercel's Pro plan is $20 a month per developer seat, with $20 of included usage credit and pay-as-you-go usage above that. Its free Hobby plan is for personal, non-commercial use only, so it isn't an option for a live store. Large brands typically move to Vercel Enterprise, which is custom-priced.

Why teams still choose Next.js: existing in-house React expertise, a site that's mostly content with commerce added, or one codebase serving several brands. You connect it to Shopify through the Headless channel, which manages Storefront API tokens for each storefront.

Why does a headless build cost so much more than a theme?

Because a theme gives you a lot for free that a headless storefront has to build from scratch. With Online Store 2.0 you get a theme editor, app blocks, search, filtering, customer accounts and Shopify-managed hosting out of the box.

In a headless build, your team creates or integrates:

  1. Every template: home, collection, product, search, cart, account, blog, landing pages.
  2. Merchandising tools: filters, sorting, product recommendations, bundles.
  3. Content editing: a headless CMS, its content model and preview, so marketers aren't dependent on developers.
  4. App replacements: apps that inject into themes don't work headless, so reviews, wishlists, subscriptions and upsells need API integrations or headless-ready alternatives.
  5. SEO plumbing: metadata, structured data, sitemaps, redirects and rendering strategy.
  6. Analytics and consent: tracking, pixels and cookie consent wired up by hand.

What are the ongoing costs of headless Shopify?

Expect a monthly development budget for as long as the storefront runs. Shopify releases a new API version every quarter, and each stable version is supported for at least 12 months, so your storefront needs regular upgrades. On top of that come framework and dependency updates, security patches, monitoring, CMS and hosting bills, and every new feature your marketing team asks for.

A theme store also needs maintenance, but much less of it: Shopify hosts it, the theme editor handles day-to-day changes, and apps install without development.

When is headless Shopify not worth the cost?

When a well-built Liquid theme can do what you need, which is true for most brands. Headless is rarely worth it for:

  • Speed alone. A lean custom theme with fewer apps and optimized media usually gets most of the gain. See our Shopify speed optimization guide.
  • A premium look. Custom theme design can look just as distinctive. Read Shopify theme vs custom design.
  • Teams without developers. If nobody will maintain the code after launch, the store will decay.
  • App-heavy stores that rely on many theme-based apps for reviews, bundles and personalization.
  • Early-stage brands still changing their offer every month.

Our take: headless pays off for brands with a concrete reason, such as a product configurator, a content platform, a native app or a multi-brand frontend, and the budget to keep developing it. If the reason is "it sounds more advanced," spend the money on a custom theme and marketing instead.

Frequently asked questions

Is Shopify Hydrogen free?

Yes. Hydrogen is a free, open-source framework, and Oxygen hosting is included at no extra charge on paid Shopify plans from Starter to Plus. You still pay for your Shopify plan and for the developers who build and maintain the storefront.

Can I go headless on the Basic plan?

Yes. Shopify's docs list Basic among the plans with Oxygen included, and you can connect any other frontend through the Headless channel. Your plan choice should depend on the commerce features you need, not on headless.

Is headless Shopify cheaper to run than a theme?

No. Shopify itself says a headless storefront costs more to build and run than a theme. Even with free Oxygen hosting, you pay for ongoing development, a CMS if you use one and app integrations.

Is Hydrogen or Next.js cheaper for headless Shopify?

Hydrogen on Oxygen avoids a separate hosting bill on paid plans. Next.js on Vercel adds hosting from $20 per developer seat a month plus usage, but may save build time if your team already knows it. Build and maintenance costs usually matter more than hosting.

Can I switch back from headless to a Shopify theme?

Yes. Your products, customers and orders stay in Shopify, so you can launch a theme storefront and retire the headless frontend. You'll need to rebuild pages, content and app integrations in the theme and set up redirects for any changed URLs.
