Can Shopify stores sell through ChatGPT and other AI assistants?
Yes. Through Shopify's agentic storefronts, eligible stores' products are shared with AI channels including ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini, and Meta surfaces. It's active by default for eligible stores and managed in the Shopify admin under Sales channels > Agentic.
Shopify announced agentic storefronts in December 2025 and expanded them in January 2026, alongside the Universal Commerce Protocol. In May 2026 they got a dedicated page in the admin, where merchants can see AI channel performance, the search queries their products rank for, and suggestions for improving product data. Orders from AI channels show up in your admin with channel or referrer attribution, and you keep the customer relationship.
How does agentic commerce on Shopify work?
Your products flow into Shopify Catalog, a structured index of products across Shopify stores. AI assistants query that catalog to recommend products, then send shoppers to buy either on your checkout or through a Shopify-powered checkout inside the assistant.
- Shopify Catalog: Shopify standardizes and enriches product data (titles, descriptions, options, images, price, availability) and keeps inventory and prices updated continuously.
- Agentic storefronts: the admin feature that distributes that catalog to AI channels and lets you choose which ones you sell on.
- Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP): an open standard co-developed by Shopify and Google, with companies including Amazon, Walmart, Stripe and Salesforce. It defines how agents search catalogs, build carts, link identities and complete checkout, and supports REST, MCP, AP2 and A2A.
- Agentic plan: lets brands that don't run their online store on Shopify list products in Shopify Catalog and sell in AI channels.
How does checkout work in each AI channel?
It depends on the channel. ChatGPT sends shoppers to your own checkout, while Google AI Mode, Gemini, Copilot and Meta can offer direct checkout inside the chat when it's activated.
| Channel | How shoppers buy | Key requirements (per Shopify Help Center) |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | On your online store checkout, in ChatGPT's in-app browser or a new tab | Sell to US customers (store can be based anywhere), Catalog-eligible products, completed store policies |
| Google AI Mode and Gemini | Direct checkout in the chat for US customers, if activated; otherwise redirect to your store | US-based store, Google Merchant Center account, Catalog-eligible products, completed policies |
| Microsoft Copilot | Direct checkout in Copilot, if activated | Catalog-eligible products, Agentic Storefronts terms |
| Meta (for example Muse) | Direct checkout in the channel, if activated | Catalog-eligible products, Agentic Storefronts terms |
A note on ChatGPT. OpenAI launched Instant Checkout in 2025, but in March 2026 it shifted focus to search and product discovery, and buyers now typically finish purchases on the merchant's site. For Shopify stores, Shopify's help center describes ChatGPT as a discovery-focused referrer with no direct checkout setting. Shopify says there are no extra fees for selling on ChatGPT or for direct checkout in Google's channels beyond standard payment processing.
Direct checkout has limits. On Google AI Mode and Gemini, for example, subscriptions, bundles, customizable products and B2B-only products aren't supported, local delivery and pickup aren't available, and Google Analytics and custom pixels don't fire. Only server-side checkout events are sent, so check your attribution setup.
How do I check if my store is eligible?
Open Sales channels > Agentic in your admin. You'll see either a Catalog product count or an Ineligible warning you can click for the reason.
- Fill in your Terms of service, Privacy policy and Return and refund policy under Settings > Policies. ChatGPT and Google channels require them.
- Accept the Shopify Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms of Service.
- For Google, connect Google Merchant Center, usually through the Google & YouTube channel with product and shipping sync turned on.
- Check which channels are turned on and whether direct checkout is active for each.
- Review products that shouldn't appear. Setting a product to Unlisted hides it from all AI channels (and from search engines and your store search).
B2B-only products are excluded automatically when Shopify can detect them through B2B catalogs or login requirements. If you hide wholesale prices with a third-party app, Shopify may not detect it, so check those products.
What should merchants do to get recommended by AI assistants?
Treat product data as your storefront. AI assistants pick products based on how well your data matches a shopper's request, so complete, specific and accurate data wins.
- Write descriptive titles: product type, key attribute and differentiator ("Linen duvet cover, stonewashed, queen") rather than a brand-only name.
- Answer real questions in descriptions: materials, dimensions, fit, compatibility, care, who it's for. Put any required legal disclosures within the first 6,000 characters, as Shopify asks.
- Use variants properly: group sizes and colors under one product so they appear as one listing.
- Map custom data: if key attributes live in metafields, metaobjects or tags, use Shopify Catalog Mapping so they reach AI channels.
- Use the right product category from Shopify's standard taxonomy, plus high-quality images of each variant.
- Keep price and stock accurate: assistants check availability. Decide whether to share compare-at prices.
- Make policies clear: shipping times, returns and warranties. Shopify includes store policies in your /agents.md and /llms.txt discovery files.
- Collect reviews: OpenAI says ChatGPT ranks merchants on factors such as availability, price, quality and whether they're the maker or primary seller. Reviews and a strong brand presence across the web feed that picture of quality.
What is AEO, and does it still matter if Shopify syndicates my products?
Yes. Answer engine optimization (AEO) is about getting your brand and content cited when people ask AI assistants questions, and it covers what Catalog doesn't: your expertise, comparisons and buying guides.
Catalog handles products. But many shopping journeys start with a question like "what's the best mattress for side sleepers?" Assistants answer those with information from across the web, and web crawling still matters. Shopify notes that opting out of a channel doesn't stop crawlers from indexing your pages.
- Publish guides that answer specific buyer questions in the first paragraph, then go into detail.
- Use question-style headings, comparison tables and FAQs on collection and blog pages.
- Keep structured data (Product, Offer, Review, FAQ schema) valid in your theme.
- Customize agents.md, llms.txt and llms-full.txt. Since May 2026, Shopify lets you edit them with Liquid templates in your theme, for example to highlight your bestsellers, shipping regions and support details.
- Get mentioned elsewhere: press, comparison articles, Reddit threads and marketplaces all shape what assistants say about you.
Our take: AI channels reward the same fundamentals as good SEO and good merchandising. Brands with clean data, clear policies and genuinely useful content are ready. The rest are invisible to a growing group of shoppers.
What should I watch out for?
A few practical risks come with selling through AI channels.
- Attribution: pixels may not fire in direct checkout, so rely on Shopify's channel attribution and server-side events.
- Unsupported products: products in OpenAI's prohibited categories won't appear in ChatGPT, and Google's direct checkout excludes subscriptions and bundles.
- Opt-out delay: turning off ChatGPT's Catalog access can take up to 7 days to stop sharing.
- Region limits: ChatGPT requires selling to US customers, and Google's direct checkout requires a US-based store, so non-US brands should check each channel's requirements.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need an app to sell on ChatGPT with Shopify?
No. Shopify shares eligible products with ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog automatically, and there's no ChatGPT app to install. You need completed store policies, Catalog-eligible products and to sell to US customers.
Does it cost extra to sell through AI channels?
Shopify says there are no extra fees for selling on ChatGPT or for direct checkout in Google AI Mode and Gemini. You pay your standard payment processing fees.
Can I opt out of ChatGPT or other AI channels?
Yes. In Sales channels > Agentic, turn off Allow Shopify to manage for me, choose the channel and turn off Catalog access. For ChatGPT it can take up to 7 days to stop sharing, and crawlers can still index your public pages.
Is ChatGPT Instant Checkout available for Shopify stores?
Not as a Shopify setting. Shopify describes ChatGPT as a discovery channel where purchases happen on your own checkout in an in-app browser or new tab. OpenAI shifted Instant Checkout's focus in March 2026, so check OpenAI's and Shopify's help pages for changes.
Can I sell in AI channels if I'm outside the US?
Partly. ChatGPT requires your store to sell to US customers, but the store can be based anywhere. Google AI Mode and Gemini direct checkout require a US-based store, while customers elsewhere can still discover your products and buy on your site.
Will my B2B or wholesale products show up in ChatGPT?
Shopify automatically excludes B2B-only products it can identify, such as those in B2B catalogs or behind customer login. Products sold to both B2B and DTC customers show the DTC price. If a third-party app hides your wholesale prices, check those products manually.
